This project will mark Vancouver’s 125th anniversary by creating and publishing a very special book­-The History of Metropolitan Vancouver by the late Chuck Davis. In writing the book Davis set out to cover each year of Vancouver’s incorporation in a chronicle style. In other words, the text forms a massive collection of stories, news reports, essays, character portraits and factoids that are joined chronologically rather than thematically. The hardcover book will have 512 large-format pages, 500 archival photos and will be published in October, 2011. This project will result in an appropriate and lasting monument to Greater Vancouver’s first 125 years.

Celebrate the book and the life of Chuck Davis with a free book launch event on Tuesday, December 6th at 7:00 pm. Join journalist Allen Garr, broadcaster Red Robinson, musician Dal Richards & others to celebrate the launch at the Vancouver Public Library—350 West Georgia Street, Vancouver. Other speakers include publisher Howard White, Councillor Heather Deal, Tourism Vancouver CEO Rick Antonson. Bob Loblaw Queer Art Society is proud to present Paul Anthony’s Talent Time: Vancouver Special. Talent Time is not only a live comedy-variety show with packed audiences at the Biltmore Cabaret, but also a cable-access TV series (and website). To celebrate Vancouver’s
125th, we are producing a “Vancouver Special” series. Each show’s theme relates to Vancouver’s past, present, future, cultures, and environment. Every age, ethnicity, and style of talent is represented. Comedians, opera singers, psychics, musicians, Chinese dancers, wrestlers, senior’s vaudeville troupes, First Nations performers, and more! When Paul Anthony asks “What time is it?” the answer is “Talent Time!”

Megaphone Community Voices Issue

Megaphone Magazine’s special “Community Voices Issue” celebrates voices from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and inner-city communities. This issue will include residents’ articles, poems, stories, artwork and photos, and will focus on the neighbourhood’s positive community elements. This special publication will be launched at a Downtown Eastside community event where contributing authors can present public readings of their work. As part of this special project, Megaphone will hold seven writing workshops for interested contributors with partners PHS Community Services Society and the City of Vancouver.

The special issue will be launched on April 22nd and there will be a launch event, with readings, at the Waldorf Hotel on May 3rd.
