Vancouver Dialogues Project book launch part of July 5 event

A unique project that connects Aboriginal and immigrant communities in Vancouver will celebrate the launch of a book that documents highlights from the project’s 18-month journey to bring diverse communities together.

The Tuesday event will also include the premiere screening of a project documentary video; display of multimedia installations showcasing the project’s initiatives and activities; and, an original performance capturing the spirit and stories of the project.

The Vancouver Dialogues Project book launch and film preview takes place Tuesday, July 5, 2011, 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at SFU Woodward’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (149 West Hastings Street, entrance via courtyard between Hastings and Cordova Streets). Registration is free but must be booked in advance by email [email protected] or by calling 604-871-6324.

The project was started last year to increase understanding and strengthen relations among the city’s Aboriginal and newcomer/non-Aboriginal communities. Over 2,000 people have participated in dialogue circles, elder and youth conversations, a web survey, literature scan, Photovoice project and interviews. Twelve cultural exchanges saw over 500 participants visit Aboriginal sites and community gathering places such as Temple Sholom, the Ismaili Centre of B.C. and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. in Chinatown.

The Vancouver Dialogues Project between Aboriginal and immigrant communities is an initiative convened by the City of Vancouver and diverse community partners. The book launch and event will be a celebration of the project’s achievements to help increase understanding and strengthen relations between Aboriginal and immigrant communities.

Event participants will receive a copy of the Vancouver Dialogues book.
