Hapa-Palooza: A Vancouver Celebration of Mixed-Roots Arts and Ideas is the launch of a new cultural festival that commemorates the City’s 125th anniversary and celebrates the city’s identity as a place of hybridity, synergy and acceptance. In an unprecedented gathering of artists, Hapa-palooza will bring together in one festival Vancouver’s many talents of mixed-heritage and hybrid cultural identities. A vibrant fusion of music, dance, literary, artistic and film performances, Hapa-palooza places prominence on celebrating and stimulating awareness of mixed-roots identity, especially amongst youth.

With support from the City of Vancouver’s 125th Anniversary Grants Program and the participation of the Government of Canada.

Turning Point Ensemble - Vancouver Snapshots 125

“Vancouver Snapshots 125” is a multi-dimensional musical exploration of the rich cultural heritage of Vancouver over the past 125 years. In concerts, symposia and workshops, the Turning Point Ensemble will join with the Orchid Ensemble, soprano Heather Pawsey and curator David Duke, to present a series of snapshots of key historical periods in Vancouver’s past. The programming will include re-creation of temperance ballads, Chinese immigrant cultural experience, the age of opulence, and the coming of age of Vancouver as a global city. Vancouver Snapshots 125 will feature a gala concert at the Roundhouse on the evening of Saturday September 10 and a series of musical walking tours on Sunday September 11.

125 Stories of Grandview Woodland’s Residents

Date: Stories will be collected July 1 to September 5 and a public reading event will be held in early Fall 2011

Write a story of a memorable event or experience from your time as a resident of Grandview Woodland. Stories can span the decades from the present to as far back as contributors can recall. 125 of these stories will be collected in a single publication as a legacy project with a permanent installation in the community. Stories will be collected from as diverse a pool of community voices as possible (aboriginal, youth, immigrant, LGBTQ2S, vulnerable populations etc.). 25 of the stories will be shared with the public at an outdoor event in Grandview Woodland Park in the fall 2011. Deadline for story submissions is September 5th, 2011.
