Join Vancouver’s 125th Birthday Party!

FREE, all-ages event at Jack Poole Plaza featuring: 54-40, Bend Sinister, Olympic Cauldron Lighting, Birthday Cake and more

Date: Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from 2pm to 10pm
Location: Jack Poole Plaza (site of the Olympic Cauldron), outdoor plaza at Thurlow & Canada Place, adjacent to the Vancouver Convention Centre (1055 Canada Place)

The City of Vancouver was incorporated on April 6, 1886 and on April, 6, 2011 Vancouver will come together to celebrate 125 years of history with a free, fun-filled, family-friendly event that honours our city’s diversity, First Nations heritage and distinction as a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2011. The Birthday Live celebration begins with a ball hockey tournament for youth and adults at 2:00 PM and continues until 10 PM with live music, DJs, food, street arts, spectacular video art, special performances and more. Vancouver’s Mayor Gregor Robertson and other dignitaries will be on hand for official ceremonies including lighting the Olympic cauldron and cutting a BIG birthday cake! Close to transit, free bicycle valet on site.

Summer Live – July 8, 9, 10 2011

Summer Live, a free, three-day multidisciplinary and intercultural celebration for citizens and visitors will be held July 8-10, 2011 in Stanley Park.

FREE Outdoor Festival to Celebrate Vancouver’s 125th Anniversary!

Dates: July 8, 9, 10, 2011 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) with activities running daily from 12 noon through 11pm.

Location: Brockton Point in Stanley Park (see map below)

Summer Live is a free, three-day festival in Stanley Park hosted by the City of Vancouver on July 8, 9 and 10, 2011 to celebrate Vancouver’s 125th anniversary.

Festival Highlights:

  • Free performances by top Vancouver and international artists including The New Pornographers, Neko Case, Mother Mother, Daniel Wesley, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bramwell Tovey, Dan Mangan, Spirit of the West, Barney Bentall and the Legendary Hearts, The Zolas, Celso Machado, Said the Whale, Hey Ocean!, En Karma, Fond of Tigers, and renowned Indian violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam.
  • Coast Salish canoe races in Coal Harbour, Slahal games, storytelling and drum songs with members of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.
  • A diverse showcase of arts and culture including the joyful wonder of Public Dreams, the contemporary butoh of Kokoro Dance, performances and workshops by the Taiyuan Puppet Theatre Company of Taiwan, a special Bollywood Birthday Party by South Asian Arts dance and theatre company, a survey of Vancouver video art, and sensational projections by Urban Visuals.
  • Family entertainment and sports activities including a youth volleyball tournament, mini-soccer and a sports day with fun activities like the classic three-legged race.
  • A free shuttle bus from Waterfront Station (downtown) to the festival will run daily from 11am to 11pm; and a free, secure bicycle compound at Brockton Point will provide an easy way to safely park bikes at Stanley Park during the Summer Live festival.
