Eco Fashion Week in Vancouver

Eco Fashion Week brings ethical fashion to the runway with a three-day event to showcase imaginative and sustainable collections. The historic neighbourhood of Gastown will become the backdrop of Eco Fashion Week as it showcases the best of international style and sustainability. The three days of shows will feature collections by talented designers such as the notable Anna Kosturova (Sports Illustrated), Nicole Bridger, the elegant Anna Talbot, as well as Gypsy Market Vintage, Singapore’s JuJube, up and coming New York designer Titania Iglis and Quebec’s most notorious eco label Harricana par Mariouche. October 7 will conclude EFW with a runway show by celebrity designer Jeff Garner of Prophetik, considered to be at the forefront of eco design.

New this season is “The Window” Trade Show and Boutique, open to the public and featuring some of the best green products advancing ecological responsibility in design and manufacturing. Set against the backdrop of “DJ Shopping”, attendees will be hosted with entertainment by the notorious DJ Leanne’s Girls on Wax.

Vancouver’s anniversary celebrations continue with the Vancouver 125 Poetry Conference

Vancouver Poet Laureate Brad Cran

Vancouver’s Poet Laureate, Brad Cran, announced details today for the Vancouver 125 Poetry Conference which will be an unprecedented collaboration among Vancouver’s poetry communities to create a four-day literary event at SFU Woodward’s from October 19-22, 2011.

 

“This poetry conference will gather together a wide range of poets from across North America,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “We are proud to support this unique artistic project during our year as Cultural Capital of Canada.”

Programming will include daytime seminars and discussions that explore the poetics of everything from the avante garde to traditional poetic forms. In the evenings the wide array of poets will perform in cabarets as part of the Vancouver International Writers Festival.

Keynote poets include Governor General’s Award and Griffin Prize winner Don McKay; the esteemed American poet Fanny Howe, winner of the Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters; and, Martin Espada who has been hailed as the Latino poet of his generation and the Pablo Neruda of North American authors.

On the last day of the conference, Brad’s successor, Vancouver’s third Poet Laureate, will be introduced to the literary community.

Vancouver’s milestone birthday has been marked by two major civic events, Birthday Live on April 6th and Summer Live from July 8-10, 2011 and will continue through to December. With inspiration from local, national and international poets at the Vancouver 125 Poetry Conference, Vancouver’s 125th year will be a defining one in the history of our literature.

Please join us in Gastown on June 12, 2011 for a celebration of our 125th anniversary and commemoration of the Great Fire of 1886. The day will begin with a parade of fire trucks from different eras including a must see 1889 horse drawn steam engine. Following the parade, stop by Gastown to see the history of your fire department, talk to a fire fighter, jump onto a fire truck and enjoy some great music courtesy of the VFRS Band.

Parade: 10:00 am
Parade Route: begins at Gore and Cordova, heads north on Gore to Powell, west on Powell to Carrall.
Event: 11:00 – 4:00 pm, Gastown (Powell and Carrall). Opening Ceremonies at 12:00 pm with Mayor Gregor Robertson.
